Equal Justice, Criminal Justice Reform
and Community Policing

"We need to end the mass incarceration pipeline by providing federally-funded proven, effective alternative programs to rehabilitate offenders by focusing on the root causes of non-violent and property crime: poverty."

We need to roll-back mandatory minimum sentences for non-violent drug offenses that disproportionately affect people of color, indigenous people and the poor, especially for marijuana which is legal in Oregon.

“We have less than 5 percent of the world’s population but nearly 25 percent of its prisoners. Mass incarceration has crushing consequences: racial, social, and economic. It reinforces systemic patterns of racial inequity across our society, with vastly unequal treatment at every step. And it is not necessary to keep our communities safe”

— Brennan Center for Justice

We need to end the mass incarceration pipeline by providing federally-funded proven, effective alternative programs to rehabilitate offenders by focusing on the root causes of non-violent and property crime: poverty.

I am against the death penalty and will vote for a federal moratorium on the death penalty. The death penalty is morally wrong, cruel and unusual punishment that does not deter crime. Throughout U.S. history it has been disproportionately handed out to people of color, indigenous people and the poor who cannot overcome the racial bias and financial expenses of a proper legal defense in our current justice system.

Community policing can work, if properly funded. I support federal funds as incentives for police departments who adopt community policing combined with diverse citizen oversight with real authority. The federal government has a role to set those standards. Overall community public safety is too important to defund, but we need to hold police departments accountable to the public.

We need to demilitarize police departments by legislating what is acceptable equipment and what are military weapons of war. It is NOT acceptable for police departments to use weapons of war against citizens and residents. If they do, federal funding should be stripped.
